All About Developmental Disabilities offers workshops on dating, employment

DECATUR, Ga. -- All About Developmental Disabilities (AADD) will host workshops for families living with developmental disabilities at two locations this fall. Through their Family Support Center, designed to serve individuals and families living with developmental disabilities in metro Atlanta and across Georgia, AADD offers assistance during various life transitions.

Each workshop will help participants learn more about a specific issue, including dating, employment and planning for future needs. Tuesday workshops will be held at AADD’s Family Support Center in Decatur at 125 Clairemont Ave, Suite 300, Decatur, 30030. Thursday workshops will be held at the Marcus Jewish Community Center, 5342 Tilly Mill Rd, Atlanta, 30338.

Race this weekend: Udder Mud Run

COVINGTON, Ga. -- A fun, family-friendly mud run will splash down in Covington this weekend.

The Udder Mud Run is a 6K race course packed with more than 20 obstacles, including a wall climb, slip 'n' slide and mud crawl. It will be held Saturday, Aug. 9 at 8 a.m. at the Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center.

Participants must be at least 10 years old. Those ages 13 and younger are required to run with an adult buddy. Awards will be given to the top finishers; all runners will receive T-shirts and medals.

Registration is $60 for the 6K and $25 for a family-oriented 1-mile course. The prices go up on race day, so runners are encouraged to sign up in advance.

Money raised by the Udder Mud Run will benefit camps hosted by the FFA and FCCLA.

COVINGTON, Ga. -- Join the Newton High School community for a 5K and cookout this weekend.

The Running Rams 5K will be held Saturday, May 17. Race day registration for this afternoon race opens at 2:45 p.m. Runners will begin at 4 p.m., while a tot trot for children under age 6 is scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m.

All runners are invited to stick around for a barbecue and awards ceremony after the race.

Fees are $25 for the 5K or $20 per runner for groups of 10 or more. The tot trot is free for participants. Proceeds will benefit the Newton High School track and field team.

Shane's Rib Shack to celebrate summer with free ribs

(WXIA) -- Few foods say "summer" like baby back ribs, and Shane's Rib Shack wants to celebrate the change in seasons with free summertime food.

On Saturday, May 17, participating Shane's Rib Shack locations will give away a free half-rack of baby back ribs and a 20-ounce drink to the first 100 customers. The lucky diners will also receive rib giveaway T-shirts.

"Our fifth annual rib giveaway provides us the opportunity to say thank you to all of our loyal customers and fans who have made Shane's Rib Shack what it is today," chain founder and president Shane Thompson said in a release.

Race this weekend: Covington Cheerios Challenge

COVINGTON, Ga. -- This year's Covington Cheerios Challenge 5K/10K will be held this Saturday, Apr. 19 at the Covington Family YMCA.

The race began in 2001 as a way for Newton County families to get a jump start on healthier living. Hundreds of adults and kids participate in four separate events every year.

The fun will begin with a 10K at 7:30 a.m., followed by a Tot Trot for children younger than 6 at 8:30 a.m. A 1-mile fun run will be off and running at 9 a.m., while the 5K will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Job Search Boot Camp coming to Covington

COVINGTON, Ga. -- The Georgia Department of Labor is co-sponsoring a large career expo in Newton County this month.

The job fair will be proceeded by Job Search Boot Camp, which gives veterans and active duty military personnel an opportunity to brush up on their interview skills.

Boot Camp will be held Tuesday, Mar. 18. The career expo will be Thursday, Mar. 20. Both events will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Georgia Piedmont Technical College's Newton Center.

The job fair is open to everyone and will begin at 9:30 a.m. for those who don't attend the boot camp. Attendees must dress professionally and bring plenty of copies of their résumés.

Ga. Connections Academy accepting students for 2014-15 school year

(WXIA) -- A few seats are still available at Georgia Connections Academy for the 2014-15 school year.

Georgia Connections Academy is a virtual K-12 public school that allows students to learn at their own pace. It is fully accredited and open to all school-age Georgia children.

"We are enrolling 1,000 additional students across all grade levels for the coming academic year," lead principal Heather Robinson said in a release. "We have a waiting list as we open enrollment, so we encourage parents to get their applications in now."
