COVINGTON, Ga. -- This year's Covington Cheerios Challenge 5K/10K will be held this Saturday, Apr. 19 at the Covington Family YMCA.

The race began in 2001 as a way for Newton County families to get a jump start on healthier living. Hundreds of adults and kids participate in four separate events every year.

The fun will begin with a 10K at 7:30 a.m., followed by a Tot Trot for children younger than 6 at 8:30 a.m. A 1-mile fun run will be off and running at 9 a.m., while the 5K will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Registration prices range from $7 for the Tot Trot (no T-shirt) to $65 for a family four-pack, which includes entry into the 10K, 5K or 1-mile races. Visit active.com for more information and to sign up. Registration includes a T-shirt; prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in each race, and the top three finishers in each age group.

Additionally, $100 cash prizes will be given to anyone who can beat the course records; see the top times at the Active.com site.

Money raised by the Cheerios Challenge goes to the YMCA's scholarship programs. The Covington Family YMCA is located at 2140 Newton Drive.
