'Reality Bytes' to teach Newton residents about computer safety

COVINGTON, Ga. -- Sheriff's officials in Newton County are using a new approach to take a "byte" out of cyber crimes.

The Reality Bytes Cyber Safety Summit 2011 has been designed to educate the community about preventable crimes and ways to play it safe while using the Internet. It will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13 at the Church at Covington.

Several presenters are scheduled to address attendees, including representatives from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Juvenile Justice Fund and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. There will also be a special performance from the Alcovy High School chorus.

To register for the event, call 678-625-1412 or email your name and telephone number to ncsorealitybytes@yahoo.com. Registering for the event puts participants in a drawing for door prizes at the summit.

Organizers encourage parents to bring children older than 12 to the event so they can hear firsthand accounts of the very present dangers lurking in modern technology.

The Church at Covington is located at 11975 Highway 142 in Oxford.
