Weekend storms result in flooding, mudslide

ATLANTA -- Heavy rain throughout much of metro Atlanta resulted in flooding Sunday morning.

11Alive meteorologist Allison Chinchar said certain areas in northeastern Georgia got between 4 and 6 inches of rain, including Forsyth, Hall and north Fulton counties.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office said the Atlanta Road area of Flowery Branch should be avoided, as more than 6 inches of rain shut down the street between Spout Springs and Wade Orr roads. The city of Flowery Branch declared a state of emergency Sunday evening.

Authorities search for missing 13-year-old girl

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Authorities are searching for a 13-year-old girl who went missing from her home earlier this Month. 

Jordan Marie Aaron was reported missing by her parents after she vanished from her bedroom before 6 a.m. on Thursday, May 2. 

Authorities are treating Aaron's disappearance as a runaway case because her makeup and hair products were missing from her room. 

Aaron recently had ankle surgery and walks with a slight limp. She frequently uses social media sites such as Facebook, Tagged, Smeet and others. 

Anyone with information on Aaron's whereabouts should contact the Newton County Sheriff's Department by calling 678-625-5007 or sending an anonymous email to the department.

Jobless rate drops to 7.9 percent

ATLANTA -- Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate dropped to 7.9 percent in March, down four-tenths of a percentage point from 8.3 percent in February.

In Newton County, the jobless rate was 9.4 percent in March.

State labor officials said Thursday the rate declined because of an increase in the number of jobs and fewer new layoffs.

Metro Athens had the state's lowest jobless rate at 5.9 percent.

The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 10.4 percent.

Newton County cleaning up after tornado

MANSFIELD, Ga. -- They are still cleaning up in Newton County.

Last Friday, an E-F-2 tornado hit the small town of Mansfield.

The twister damaged more than a dozen homes, took down trees, and left one person injured.

About 12 homes were damaged by the twister.  An elderly woman who had been trapped in her home was transported to Clearview Medical Center in Monroe after breaking her leg.

Teen shoots man who shot him years earlier

CONYERS, Ga. -- The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that left one man in jail and another with life-threatening injuries.

The shooting happened at around 7 p.m. Sunday at a house on Fieldstone View Lane SE in Conyers.

Rockdale County Sheriff's Inv. Michael Camp said 19-year-old Rashad Thompson is accused of shooting 25-year-old Sandino Aikens of Covington at least four times.

After shooting Aikens, Thompson ran to his home on nearby Country Trace, where he was arrested about half an hour later, Camp said.

Aikens is in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital. Thompson is being held in the Rockdale County Jail on an aggravated assault charge; more charges are possible, according to Camp.

Accident closes I-20 WB in Newton County

NEWTON COUNTY -- One westbound lane is now open after an accident on I-20 east of GA 142.

Georgia Department of Transportation expects it to be clear by 11:45a.m.

Covington expands studio, seeks to reclaim "Hollywood of the South"

COVINGTON, Ga. -- In recent years, Georgia has successfully competed with Hollywood for moviemaking projects. Now with some recently announced studio expansions, it's clear that Georgia moviemakers are starting to compete with each other.

Triple Horse studios is the latest to up its moviemaking game. Its Newton County facility has been making TV and movies for more than a decade. Now it's planning to build five new sound stages here -- to fill a void in Georgia.

"We've got some of the best tax incentives in the nation, yet we don't have the (indoor) facilities to allow these mega movies to come to us," said Karl Horstmann, CEO of Triple Horse.
