2 killed in Newton Co. crash

COVINGTON, Ga. -- Two people were killed and two others were seriously hurt in a crash on Highway 36, just south of Covington Thursday night.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m., a trooper spotted a Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed and passing cars on double yellow lines, according to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright. Wright said the trooper activated his lights and siren, but the driver refused to stop.

Wright said the driver lost control of his vehicle while trying to pass another car near Cedar Creek Drive and collided with a Honda Pilot in the oncoming lane.

The driver and passenger of the Accord died on the scene. They were identified as 27-year-old Donald Justin Barnes and 30-year-old Kimberly Nicole Anglin, both of Covington.

The driver and passenger of the Pilot were transported to Atlanta Medical Center in serious, but non-life-threatening conditions. They were identified as 17-year-old William Nicolaus Tanner and 18-year-old Amy Michelle Daniecki, also of Covington.

The officer was not hurt.
