5-year-old killed on school's playground | News
COVINGTON, Ga. -- Students and teachers at a Newton County school are grieving after the sudden death of a child on Monday.
Officials with the school released a statement Wednesday afternoon shedding light on the tragic incident that apparently occurred on the playground of Newton County Theme School.
"We are struggling to comprehend the heartbreaking accident that occurred Monday afternoon and are grieving the loss of such a beautiful little girl," the statement read.
Five-year-old Andrea Tyrah DeBruhl died after she was climbing on a piece of playground equipment and "experienced an emergency," according to Covington police.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner's Office discovered that the child died of accidental asphyxia after getting caught on the playground equipment.
School officials reported to investigators that numerous adults - about 10 teachers and paraprofessionals - were supervising students on the playground when the accident occurred.
From there, the school's statement read that teachers provided medical assistance to the child and called 911. Police who arrived on the scene also performed CPR. DeBruhl was taken Piedmont Newton Hospital but, sadly, emergency personnel were unable to revive her.
"We are focused on supporting the students and staff at Newton County Theme School as we navigate through this terrible tragedy," a school official said. "Counselors have been and will continue to be available to anyone at the school who needs assistance."
