COVINGTON, Ga. -- What started as a YMCA program to encourage healthy habits in children has grown to an annual event in Covington.

The 14th annual Cheerios Challenge will be held Saturday, Apr. 18 at the Covington Family YMCA.

Runners have the option of competing in a 10K or a 5K. There will also be a 1-mile fun run and a Trix Tot Trot for the kids.

Registration is $25 for the 5K and 10K, $17 for the 1-miler, $8 for the tot trot, or $70 for a family four-pack of race entries. Runners in the 10K, 5K and 1-miler will receive T-shirts, while tot trot runners will be given medals. All participants will also be treated to family-friendly activities at the finish line.

Cash prizes will be granted to any runners who can break the course records:

COVINGTON, Ga. -- The Relay for Life Committee of Newton County will hold a 5K fundraiser this weekend.

The 7th annual Run for Hope will be Sunday, Mar. 1 at 3 p.m.; registration opens at 1 p.m., and a mile fun run starts at 2:30 p.m. Both races will be held at Cousins Middle School in Covington.

All runners will receive T-shirts and refreshments. Awards will be given to the top finishers, top masters finishers and top three runners in each age group. Fun run participants will earn ribbons.

Registration is $25 and can be completed at active.com.

Cousins Middle School is located at 8187 Carlton Trail.

COVINGTON, Ga. -- A fun, family-friendly mud run will splash down in Covington this weekend.

The Udder Mud Run is a 6K race course packed with more than 20 obstacles, including a wall climb, slip 'n' slide and mud crawl. It will be held Saturday, Aug. 9 at 8 a.m. at the Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center.

Participants must be at least 10 years old. Those ages 13 and younger are required to run with an adult buddy. Awards will be given to the top finishers; all runners will receive T-shirts and medals.

Registration is $60 for the 6K and $25 for a family-oriented 1-mile course. The prices go up on race day, so runners are encouraged to sign up in advance.

Money raised by the Udder Mud Run will benefit camps hosted by the FFA and FCCLA.

COVINGTON, Ga. -- Join the Newton High School community for a 5K and cookout this weekend.

The Running Rams 5K will be held Saturday, May 17. Race day registration for this afternoon race opens at 2:45 p.m. Runners will begin at 4 p.m., while a tot trot for children under age 6 is scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m.

All runners are invited to stick around for a barbecue and awards ceremony after the race.

Fees are $25 for the 5K or $20 per runner for groups of 10 or more. The tot trot is free for participants. Proceeds will benefit the Newton High School track and field team.

COVINGTON, Ga. -- This year's Covington Cheerios Challenge 5K/10K will be held this Saturday, Apr. 19 at the Covington Family YMCA.

The race began in 2001 as a way for Newton County families to get a jump start on healthier living. Hundreds of adults and kids participate in four separate events every year.

The fun will begin with a 10K at 7:30 a.m., followed by a Tot Trot for children younger than 6 at 8:30 a.m. A 1-mile fun run will be off and running at 9 a.m., while the 5K will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Atlanta Track Club launches scholarship program

(WXIA) -- Youth running groups, rejoice -- the Atlanta Track Club has created a scholarship program just for you.

The Peachtree Jr. Participant Challenge will award scholarships to the three organizations that have the most children registered for the 2014 Peachtree Jr. or Lil' Peach Dash.

The first place team will be given a $1,500 scholarship, a $1,250 cash donation from the Atlanta Track Club and $250 in Sports Authority store credit. Two runners-up will each get $750 scholarships, $500 donations and $250 in Sports Authority credit.

"Through the Peachtree Jr. Participant Challenge, we are able to give back to organizations that share our goal of inspiring children to be healthier and more active," Atlanta Track Club Executive Director Rich Kenah said in a release. "Atlanta Track Club is proud to partner with Sports Authority to offer these scholarships to provide extra motivation to keep kids moving."

AJC Peachtree Road Race lottery registration is now open. It will close Saturday, Mar. 22 at 11:59 p.m.

Those who are chosen for the race will be informed by Tuesday, Mar. 25.
