Mark Mitchell joins Canton police force

CANTON, Ga. -- The Canton Police Department named Mark Mitchell as new Assistant Chief Monday morning. 

Mitchell's first day of work is set for Monday, July 22, and he will be sworn in at a ceremony on July 25. 

Canton's Police Chief Robert Merchant said, "Mitchell has constantly displayed a high level of personal integrity and demonstrated an exceptional mastery of professional skills. He has a calm and even temperament and is known for his high level of energy and enthusiasm for the job."

According to Mitchell, he is honored to fill the position and looks forward to joining the agency. 

He said, "I want to help this department to
continue to build an organization of which the citizens can be extremely proud, trust and fully recognize that we will be out there everyday dedicated and committed to fulfilling the department's mission of improving the quality of life for the people of Canton."

Mitchell began his law enforcement career at age 21 with the Newton County Sheriff's Office, as reported by Officer Cordry. He started as a deputy, then moved up to sergeant. In 2005, he became Lieutenant Patrol, then a commander shortly after. 

During his time in Newton County, he served as PIO for 16 years, was a member of the S.W.A.T. team for six years and spent six more years as a team commander. 

Mitchell holds a master's degree in criminal justice from Troy University. He graduated from the 207th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.
