COVINGTON, Ga. -- The Newton County School System now earns a six-cent reimbursement for each breakfast and lunch it serves.

The school system recently became certified by the Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition Program, which makes sure schools serve healthy, balanced and affordable meals to students.

As a result, the district will earn the reimbursement for all future meals, as well as those served since May 1, 2013.

In Newton County, breakfasts provide one-fourth of children's daily calories, while lunches provide one-third. Students are only served skim or one-percent milk, and receive plenty of fruits and vegetables with their meals. More than half the grains they are offered are whole grains.
